I am new to this site, but have been reading as many of the posts as I can for the past 2 days. I recently acquired a 92 Jeep YJ and decided to keep it for a while as a toy. Problem is, there is no 4 low. It's like I'm in neutral. I've called around to some local salvages and have been quoted $700 for a rebuilt TC. Which reading some descriptions on the web, this YJ should have the NP231. My questions is, can I swap this for a bigger TC or more heavy duty without too much cut and swap involved ? Anybody have any suggestions ?

By the way, this is one of the best forums I have came accross. I have answers to just about all my questions on the YJ except the TC bit.
Thanks for any help.

Are you sure it's your transfer case? I have a similar problem with my 97 TJ. I have 4 high, just not 4 low. It is my linkage that is keeping my from engaging 4 low. Check that out first and see if that helps any first. I'll have mine straightend out the next time I go home.

If you take a look at this thread, you can get some info on swapping the innards from a 231 HD into your transfer case. Basically, you'll be looking for the bigger chaing and gears. Wink

I'm pretty sure it's the TC, but for hopes I will check the linkage. the person I got the YJ from had taken it out on a good drunk one night ended up in a washout creek and thought he was spinning the tires. Somehow the 4 low was not engaged and ended up throwing the #1 rod through the side of the block. I have since put in a old motor and drive it daily for now, but I have just been under the assumption that since 4 low isn;t working the chain has snapped or soething. Thanks !!

I suppose it could be a gear, but it would have to have a lot of broken teeth for it not to work at all. If it were your chain, it wouldn't work in any mode. I'll see if I can dig out a diagram of the gears for you.

It's an awesome thing. It was the linkage for the shifter. Thanks for your help. I haven't even looked around yet, but is there an after-market shifter for this model ? The bolt was missing out of the linkage adjustment. I have another bolt in it, and it seems to work fine, but the whole thing looks kinda rinky-dink to me. I have a few more questions about the suspension on the jeep, but I will start another post for that. Thanks again !!!!
