OK, quick synopsis...as a temporary fix to some exhaust woes, we put a piece of flex pipe where Dales muffler used to be. It sounded bad ass, so I am thinking about putting a straight pipe after the cat on both of our Jeeps....the question is the legality of it.

Now, Dale found and sent me this: http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+46.2-1047

Quote:
46.2-1047. Muffler cutout, etc., illegal.

It shall be unlawful to sell or offer for sale any (i) muffler without interior baffle plates or other effective muffling device or (ii) gutted muffler, muffler cutout, or straight exhaust. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate on the highways in the Commonwealth a motor vehicle equipped with a gutted muffler, muffler cutout, or straight exhaust.

The question is what is defined as a "straight exhaust"? In other words, if there is a cat with no muffler is that considered a straight exhaust? Or is it a striaght exhaust considered just a pipe with no muffler or cat? IMO, this particular code is totally subject to the cops and judges interpertations...

I alss found this: http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+46.2-1049

Quote:
46.2-1049. Exhaust system in good working order.

No person shall drive and no owner of a motor vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any vehicle on a highway unless it is equipped with an exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise. An exhaust system shall not be deemed to prevent excessive or unusual noise if it permits the escape of noise in excess of that permitted by the standard factory equipment exhaust system of private passenger motor vehicles or trucks of standard make.

Again the code is ambiguous at best...but one interpertation could be "if it had a muffler from the factory, you'd better have one"

Now, we know at least one other person whose done this and had it for awhile. He's had no problems with inspections and he talked himself out of a straight exhaust ticket (because he had the cat). He did get a loud exhaust ticket though...

There's no real point to this thread....I'll prolly gonna end up going with glasspacks, just so I can have something there and be sure the heeps are legal...I just felt like bitching about it. Confused
