CHEROKEE COOLING PROBLEMS

I have a '91 Cherokee. Recently aquired it. It's in great shape in all respects,
including the cleanliness and condition of the cooling system in general.
I've had the thing off-road several times and I've noticed that it tends to start running hot (needle just starts to touch the red zone before I abort) during slow crawling, particularly when crawling up a grade. I've heard these Cherokees are prone to this and have a "marginal" cooling system at best.
I've checked all the obvious like fans, rad' cap, thermostat etc., and they're
all okay. Question is: what upgrades and/or mod's can/or should be done to correct this problem?
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

I recently did a bunch of upgrades to the cooling system on my 97. You can see the writeup I did on it here. That pretty much lays it all out...

Steve.

Thanks a lot. Great article on your upgrade.
I'm going to check it out thoroughly.

I did the GDI 3 core brass radiator, Flow Kooler high volume water pump, high volume thermostat housing (I think it was from Turbo City), Robert Shaw balanced thermostat (195 degree, cherokees are meant to run warm), and converted to an open style system (which it sounds like you have, since you have a radiator cap).

That solved all of my overheating problems!
I may find the link to a good article on these upgrades. I'll let you know.

In Aussie Land where its hot most of the time, we have fitted air vents to the bonnets, to gain more air flow at low speed.
I am about to do it to my 97 XJ, I'll let you know how it goes
