Hi, first time on this board, so excuse me if my question is in the wrong part of this forum. I've got a 96 XJ Classic which I use for off road exploring. I've already got a swing away tire mount with hi-lift and 5 xtra gallons of gas, but I'm out of room for additional cans.
Any ideas for hauling more gas? I think I need to go to the roof, but really don't want to invest in a full roof rack just for fuel. Has anyone gotten gas to stay on the roof securely with some kind of modified rack or modification to the factory rails and cross members? I've got a pretty complete shop, so if it needs to be fabricated I can handle it. Thanks, Farmer Dean.

NEVER haul fluids on your roof-makes center of gravity too high! I use a hitch-haul with rubber pads, myself.

If you aren't using the cargo area...maybe fab up a reserve tank or buy a fuel cell that you could somehow switch to when the main tank is gone? Or get rid of the rear seats and make a small cage to hold a few more tanks. all I could come up with besides throwing em on the roof which isn't the best idea. That would also hurt mileage if you drove around streets/highway like that, and it probably isnt the safest place in the event of a roll-over.

Good luck...

Mark & xj87; thanks for the reply, I already built something. Take a look at my post on March 22, 2005 6:11 P.M. I just haul the extra gas to camp, then take it off to refill main tank as needed. It's about an extra 100#s on the roof, but I don't really notice much difference handling or in gas mileage. No question it's a rolling bomb though, I drive pretty defensively until I get to camp! FD.
