hi im Nathan, im 16 and im new to the forum. My 84 cherokee lacks power but the old 2.8 runs well. Are there any performance parts that can make a dramatical increase in horsepowewr besides an engine swap. Ive found an edlebrock manifold but i cant find any info on how much hp you really get out of it. Ive also found headers but do you have to drop the engine to do these sort of things. thanks

That engine is rated 115 hp @ 4800 rpm, 145 ft lb @ 2400 rpm. Adding an intake, headers and a free flowing exhaust will help...but it's not going to be anything dramatic.

The only things that will do that would be things like a supercharger, turbo/intercooler, NOS etc.

Well the 2.8 can be swapped out for a 3.1 or a 3.4 V-6 and is really the only easy upgrade for the 2.8 jeep.
The 4.0 IL6 is to long to fit easy. and a V-8 is tough too.
You can also get cams in a few var. for the 2.8 that is also swapable with the 3.1 and 3.4.
Head work will help too...porting them.
You wont ever get moster power from it but you could hang with most of the guys with a mildly worked 3.1 or even a late year 2.8
3.4 need the flywheel balanced too

Good luck

The 2.8, the 3.1, and the 3.4 (pushrod, the DOHC 3.4 is a completely different engine) are all the same block, and therefore can be swapped easily. I plan on doing this with one of my Fiero's. The Fiero GT's and late SE's came with the 2.8. I plan on getting a stock V6 engine cradle, building a decent 3.4 from an early 90's Camaro, bolt the stock 2.8 intake plenum (with FIERO stamped in it) on the 3.4 and make it look completely stock. It'll be a sleeper!!!!!!!!
