98 Jepp Grand Cherokee rough running, tries to stall while driving and while idleing. Dealer diagnosis of new fuel pump and new fuel tank and possibly new fuel pressure regulator. According to dealer fuel pump failed because fual tank deteriated and left junk in the tank. Is this common on the JGC? I did not know plastic fuel tanks could come aprt like that. What is the best way for me to confirm that it is the fuel pump? What should the pressure be at idle? It is a friends JGC so I am trying to save her $1200 the dealer wants for a new fuel tank and pump and labor. Thanks for your help.

swampy knows about the pump but i wouldnt think a plastic tank would fall apart...even if it is the tank check the junkyards or fuel cell it

Yup... Pretty common the tank deteriorates and it burns up the pump..

I guess they replaced it, It should be fine now.. But if you really want to change it you can get an aluminum fuel cell.. (But that would be alot of work.)

Thanks. Sorry for the garbled message....I had a cast on my arm the first time I posted. Anyways, I think I am going to drop the tank, pull the pump and take a look inside. I found somewhere the pressure at idle should be 39psi, and it should not drop below 25 psi within 5 minutes of shutting down....I'll start there. Thanks again.
