Crossmember removal?

Will the transmission fall out if I loosen all the bolts that hold the crossmember on? The YJ repair book I have isn't very clear about this.

Then again, it never mentioned that I would have to unbolt the oilpan to replace the starter, either.

only if you take the cross member OUT. Then you better have a jack under it. It wont fall out but it will let it drop down quit a bit.

I do want to remove it, so I can locate where an exhaust leak is coming from near the cat conv...

where is the best place to put a jack to hold up the transmission?

Place a jack or jack stand just aft or forward of the crossmember on the transfer case housing. This will adequately support the drive train when you remove the crossmember.
