Hi, I'm a newbie here and I have a question for some of the more experienced jeep folks. Letely my cherokee has been making some really strange noises in the front end area, it sounds like someone knocking on metal with a hammer. I got under the car and found a hose going from the differential up into the engine bay that has a plug in the other end of it. This hose was worn through by the driveshaft going to the front diff. I'm thinking the noise and the hole in what I'm guessing is the hole in the filler tube are related. If anyone has any suggestions I'd really appreciate it, I'm a college student and keeping my jeep in good working order means I can go to work and continue going to college. Thanks for your time.

What year is the Jeep? If it's a pre-92 XJ then the hose is one of two things, the vacuum hoses to engage and disengage the Jeep or the breather line. Based on your description, it sounds like the breather. I don't think that either is related to the noise though.

Is the noise constant regardless of speed, or does it speed up and slow down? Is it more prevalent under braking, acceleration, etc?

I found out that it's not the differential, it's fine. My buddy thhinks it might be the joints coming off the axle on the drivers side. It's a 1994 Cherokee. The noise starts up as soon as it starts moving, but if I keep it around 10 mph it only knocks intermittnetly, anything faster than that and it's pretty constant.

I'd replace the u-joints first. It's most likely either that or a wheel/unit bearing. The unit bearings are expensive (~$125 apiece) so you want to be sure that's the problem before you replace them.

You can check to see if one of the front wheels is very hot after driving (compared to the others). Generally the only two things that will get it hot are wheel bearings or a non-releasing caliper. Next, jack the front end in the air, then grab and wiggle the wheel, there should be NO movement. If there is, the bearing is letting go. You can also look for any bits of bright shiny metal around the steering knuckle, which will indicate if the bearing is self-destructing.
