I have a 97 TJ Sport with only 57k miles and OEM exhaust. Several weeks ago I noticed what sounded like an exhaust leak from the engine compartment. On inspection I found that where the individual exhaust manifold cylinder header pipes join the collector, there was a signifcant crack in the main weld. Called the Jeep dealer and they stated that this was not the first time they had heard of it but there was only a TSB on the 4 cyl engine so I was out of luck. Options recommended were to attempt welding or complete replacement $$$.

I had the crack welded but it is starting to crack again and it looks like a replacement is in order.

What is the recommendation for a replacement- OEM or an aftermarket exhaust header? I would like to stay with a stock noise level and use the OEM exhaust cat-back system. The vehicle is primarily used by my wife and I want to keep it simple and inexpensive as possible.

Thanks for any recommendations.

this place is what i just used for her jeep. it was the 2.5l engine and her manifold was only $89 to the door. that's about the cheapest i could find anywhere. installation went smoothly and no problems so far. granted, only had it on for 3 weeks tops...but it seemed well made. it came with no gaskets so expect to pick them up separately. oh, took about a week to arrive after ordering over the phone.

Some options....but none real cheap

JC Whitney offers the OMIXOEM replacement header for $280.

Quadratec offers Banks Torque Tube header for $400.

or

Borla Header for $479

Summit racing offer Pace Setter tube headers for $244 but I personally would stay away from them from personal experience years ago. There thin and they fall apart . Mine didnt last a year. But they are cheap $$$ all things concidered.

Go with the aftermarket as the OEM will just crack again, very common problem in TJs. I went with the Banks, my friend the Borla. The borla is two separate pieces and is more difficult to install, and the connection to the head pipe does not connect tightly, he eventually had to have it welded. no problems or complaints with the banks - went airborne 4X this weekend in baja and didn't crack, the OEM usually cracks after 40-50K miles during very mild dirt trails with minor potholes (torques during uneven surfaces)

hope this helps and isn't too late
