My 98 XJ's A/C is apparently dead, so I was wondering if it was possible to remove the AC unit completely. Now would doing this require a new belt, possibly one from a non-AC Cherokee?

Also just curious if it was possible if you could swap the new NSG 370 or the older AX-15 Tranny in place of my AW4 because a standard would be nice. Very Happy

Tranny swap is very doable.. And running without AC.. Just toss it. and get yourself a belt for non AC... (Note . This may require a new idler pulley..)
Check with the parts store for a belt Diagram and see if it has an added pulley..

All you need to do the tranny swap is pedal assmebly , Master cylinder and tranny from a donor (boneyard XJ) and alot of work..

You will probobly have to bypass the NSS. (Neutral Safety switch) SInce you wont have park anymore..

There are writeups around if you look...

I am about to do the same thing on a Grand Cherokee.. So if you are not in a big hurry sit back and watch I will do a writeup when I am done... Mr. Green

Thanks for advice swamp boy. I might try to call up either the local dealer about the new belt, etc. or else i'll see if they have it at auto zone. As for tranny swap, i'll figure i'd just wait till the one i have now dies then see if i can get some shop to do it for me because i'm not mechanically inclined at all. Very Happy
