Now that I've moved up the corp. ladder it's time for a new vehicle! I'm keeping the jeep but wanted to know some info on the Land Rover Discovery II's. I've been hanging out at the Land Rover dealership lately looking at the disco's talking to non salespeople about the disco's.
Anyone here own one or know a lot about them?
I'm looking at a 2003 Land Rover Discovery HSE!

Thanks for the help!

All I know about LR's is that they always leak oil... Confused Buddy of mine has a Disco and it is constantly in the shop getting the oil leak fixed...

What I was thinking. Instead of hanging out around the non-salespeople, hang out around the service area. Finger

I bought one last august. 1999 Disco II.

Safari Guard sliders & front bumper. 5x 275 Trxus on Wolf rims. 5 stock rims w/ street tires. Superwinch 8k winch. IPF offroad lights.

In hindsight I should have bought a truck or a Grand. I got a good deal on it but it sucks gas like nothing I've ever seen. Only a 4.0L V-8. Rides a lot rougher than you'd think- even with mudders on it. Too damn heavy too- 6000+ lbs. Parts are a major pain in the ass. Cheapest brake pads are $70+. For comparison water pumps are aronud $300. All in all you will pay a lot to drive that thing around.

I would never buy one from a stealership- check eBay, Auto Trader, and some rover forums. I used to check Discoworld.org but haven't been there in a while. I only paid 13k from a private seller and from a stealership it would have been over $20k. http://lrx.com/ is where I found my listing.

If you have any specific questions let me know, I've spent some time under the hood. Oh yeah- I've heard that rovers leak oil- mine never has.

all the service guys were busy working on vehicles so I couldn't really ask them a lot of questions. I know parts are pretty expensive for them but I want one with less than 35k miles on it. I'm hoping to have one by august or september, well that's my goal. I don't plan on wheeling the thing yet Wink Thanks for the input!
Qad, any major problems with it or just routine things?

Well the abs pump went out on it- luckilywhen I bought it it still had 6 months of a transferable warranty. The entire 4WD system works off of the ABS system. When one tire is spinning in mud the ABS applies brakes automatically to that wheel and gives 100% of the torque to all the other wheels. That thing would have probably been over $1000 if the warranty did not take care of it.

I guess that even the routine things are expensive [brakes [pads and rotors], water pumps, etc]. I change my own oil but the Rover place charges like $60+ for an oil change. Brake pads and rotors are real expensive compared to Jeeps and like I said- water pumps are $300+ compared to about $35 for a YJ. You can go to British pacific or google "land rover parts" and get a good idea of what I am talking about. Check out a couple of forums but don't believe all the hype.

Oh, and if you ever want to change the stereo you are going to have a time- it's mostly LR stuff so you have to get adapters out the wazoo. I ended up running a tape adapter out of my Ipod.

Mine was built when BMW still owned Rover. Ford bought LR around 2001 so that one that you are looking at probably has a Jag engine in it and may be built a little better.

I'm not really trying to talk you out of one but I am trying to let you know what I have went through and let you make your own choice. I have had it less that a year right now and I am really considering cleaning it up and selling it before 1 year has been up.

well I want to pull the radio out and put in a cd/dvd/navigation screen, that is about as bling bling as I will go. I know that the cost is a lot more but I was told that you can do a lot of the work yourself. I think if I get one with low miles then I should be fine with it. I'm going to check out some of the forums.

I don't think that will fit plus I wouldn't even want to see how much one of those costs!
