I'm considering the purchase of a Cherokee that will serve as my daily and will be used for hauling my track car to and from various courses in New England. I'd say most hauling trips would be about 150 miles, some flat (NH), some with hills (CT). I've seen posts that the 6 cylinder is not sufficient, or at least isn't ideal for towing. I've seen information that would indicate that the 8 cylinder is not as bullet proof as the 6.

The car and trailer combined will weigh in the neighborhood of 3800lbs. I'd like some help with determining which engine to go with, or if the Grand Cherokee is a better option. I prefer the old school styling, but need to think of this in terms of cargo safety since the track car is pretty expensive to replace. Any suggestions/advice?

Only thing I tow with my XJ are small trailers. The inline 6 is a great engine, but in my opinion is not one for towing loads. If you do want a jeep, something with a V-8 would handle a trailer allot better. A Grand would fit that bill.

You're going to need something bigger to tow your trailer. I was towing my jeep on a trailer behind a V-8 Durango (much more powerful and much heavier than a Cherokee), and it was insufficient in my opinion. It was a strain on the highway, pathetic in the hills, and scary in any bad weather. I traded it in for a F-250 diesel, and I'm much safer towing now.
