While trying to install my new power steering box in my TJ, I came to a major problem. I was able to disconnect everything I needed to but the pitman arm would not come off of the steering gear. I tried a pitman arm puller with a breaker bar but it just seperated, slipped down the side, and put a gouge in my pitman arm. I tried PB blaster to loosen it up if it was a little rusty. I could not think of other way to pull the arm off. Anyone have any suggestions as a way to loosen it up.

I used a puller and an impact wrench. After that didn't work, I used a breaker bar with the puller and just as I was ready to give up for the night, it ever so gently popped off. As I recall, it was a long bar and I braced myself on the axle for leverage. What seperated, the puller?

the two sides of the puller seperated and went around the pitman arm instead fo pulling it off.

In that case, try a pickle fork?

I've heard that heating the pitman arm will make it expand and then you can easily pullit off with the puller.

Be carefull not to get yourself burn though!!!

putting tension on arm w/ puller and then smacking shaft w a heavy ball peen to "shock" it loose has always worked for me. be sure to leave nut on to end of shaft to protect threads, though.
