My check engine light is on in my 2001 Grand Cherokee limited. When I had my jeep hooked up to the computer the only thing that came up was " Overdive Band Failed" does anyone know what that means?

That means that your transmission cannot or could not at one time go into overdrive. This has nothing to do with the emissions, other than that since it can't go into overdrive, your engine is reved higher, creating more emissions.

Funny,

It goes into overdrive now????? Shouldn't that fix the problem? Replacing the overdrive band, is that something a I, (a small scale backyard mech, can do or should I take it to the shop

The problem was more than likely not the band itself, probably a hydraulic problem in the valve body or dirt in a fluid passage somewhere.
That code will be stored in the computer whether its fixed or not. However after so many "trips" or "key cycles" without the problem showing up again, it will reset itself. Drive it for a while and see what happens. If you can feel it shifting into overdrive now, than chances are, the light will go out eventually. Or you could have the codes cleared and then drive it and see if it comes back.

Changing the band is definatly not an easy thing to do.. If the problem persist I would try to change the fluid and maybe the OVerdrive solinoid..

Good luck..
