So I have this leak that we have talked about before. I was at my baby shower this weekend and was talking to my uncle who is a wheelin fool and was talkin to him about the troubles I'm having. He suggested putting transmission fluid into the steering fluid station cause it's cheaper and will work fine as a substitute. Of course I wanted to varify that with youz guyz.

good idea or bad idea? In the last week I have lost about half the container of steering fluid....

I've seen it done in an emergency but don't know the long term effects of permanent use.

I know that up until the 70's, ATF was used in power steering systems, I have two cars that use transmission fluid in their systems. But I remember from school at WyoTech, they told us that transmission fluid shouldn't be used in a system that was designed for power steering fluid, but honestly, I can't remeber why, so I guess I wasn't much help in this post.

a buddy of mine had an '89 dodge daytona. his box was seriously leaking and he was tired of putting the stopleak juices in it. he started using atf on a regular basis and after time the seal finally quit leaking. weird, but just my experiences.

The seal stopped leaking because the ATF caused it to swell up. This is not a permanent solution though, because the seal will eventually crack apart and the leak will be back and worse. It is a temporary solution though, as Unimog said above.
