I was looking at possibly getting a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a V8. I was wondering about the AWD. I saw on the shifter that there's 4 Low, N, and 4 All Time. So does this mean that when you have the shifter in 4 All Time, that the vehicle is in 4WD all the time or does it only kick in when you need it? And when you have it in N, does this mean that it is in 2WD? Basically wondering if you have a V8, is there any way that it only kicks in when you need it or is there any way to be in 2WD? Thanks.

Also do they have a lot of problems with the V8 compared to the inline 6? As far as the AWD goes?

The only way to be in 2WD with a V8 is to do a t case swap...

The 5.2 (In older grands ) is a dodge 318 it has been in production since 1965 it is a very good engine..

So then its always in 4WD, there's not even a part time 4WD where it kicks in only if it's needed? Then what does putting it in N do? The reason I'm asking this is because I'm debating with either going with a Laredo which had the inline 6 or going with a Limited, which I have been looking for one with an inline 6, but they're hard to find. So I've just been thinking about just getting the Limited with a V8, cause I like the way the limited looks and because of all the options it has.

N disengages the transfer case from the front and rear axles

its for towing

Like swampy said the V8 is a good motor...as is the I6 its all a matter of preference

the 242 has 2wd 4whell part time 4wheel hi and 4 lo and the 231 has 2wd 4wdhi and 4wdlo with neutral in there as well for towing on both cases
