I am new to the jeep world in that I will be picking up my first jeep which is a 97 gc, it came stock with a space saver type spare Sad , and I am going to replace it with a full size in the near future but I dont want to take up all the cargo room with the full size, I know mopar used to make a tire carrier you could prob buy from the dealership. But I think my chance of that are over. at this point I do not want to replace the bumper and Dont want the pay the 400-500 bucks for a top rack. I know of one company who makes tire carriers that go into the luggage rack up top just like a normal arm of it would and their around 170 shipped, and was wondering if this would be a good option for me. I would have no physical difficulty getting the tire up or down. thats for the help.

I haven't really looked around for them, so I'm not much help there. Wink

But, if you go with the luggage rack, you could always build a hoist like the Humvee crowd. http://www.humvee.net/hid/exterior/tireroof.html

swamp I really like the pic. it is one thing that shouldnt really come near cars. but I dont think my tire size will be going up past 31, This isnt going to be a hardcore offroad beast(although I would like it to be trail capable) but I would really like to get that spare out of the trunk. And not spend the cash on a full ruff rack, in that I only make 7.50 and hour and live california and must pay at the cheapest price 2.50 a gallon. GLAD I got the 4.0 I6 instead of the V8 Mr. Green

You can go to Home depot and buy some 1" box tubing and a piece of 1X1 angle and make your own for about $30 ...

Here is a very bad writeup of how to do it but its pretty simple ..

And in the writeup it says 1 1/4" stainless bolts ...Its should say 1/4" ..They are 2" long...

Get to it... Mr. Green
