theres a loud humming/whirring noise when i accelerate.

ive read that it could also be a differential, t-case, or some bearing problems.

Confused

That's your pinion bearing in the rear diff. My sister used to have a 99 also and it did the same thing. I've been told thats an extremely common problem on the early WJ's. She has an 02 now and it doesn't make any noise but we shall see what develops with more mileage (it's only got 30 some thousand on it now).

Yup..Its probobly from the Aluminum 44 it gets worn over the years and starts making the humming noise.. I dont know how long it will last.. But it is not good. I also dont know if there is a way to fix it...

Can you or someone you know weld????

Your best bet would be to find a Ford Explorer axle and weld the brackets off the 44 onto it.. I have done it several times it takes me about 5 hours to do..

And you end up with a much stronger axle...

If you cannot weld.. Call some local welding shops and see if they can do it for you...

Good luck..

Carl

Would you really want an ornamental welder to work on your axle? I mean, even if he got the work done, you might get it back with hearts welded on or rod iron decerative pieces. shock

If you have to ask what parts you need then my guess is you are not certain how to repair it either. This would be best left to a professional then.

My comment was never intended to be smart-assed. Have you read on how to do the repair yet? Do you even know what the problem really is? All you know from what you have placed in your posts is that someone told you that they thought it was the pinion bearing. So now you open the diff and successfully replace the pinion bearing and put it back together and the noise is still there. Now you are out more $$ to fix it again and maybe even an entire new axle.

The diff is one areas IMO that you gotta know what the hell you are doing. I have only been that deep inside a diff 2X and both were with a friend that repairs for a living. I still won't attempt it myself either.

Find someone who knows what they are doing with differentials and have them help you with the diagnosis and repairs. Diagnosing noises over the internet is impossible.
