I am having 3 major problems with my 98 JGC. I will list these in order of annoyance.

1. The first is a clicking noise coming from the rear. The clicking gets faster as I accelerate and slower as decelerate and goes away completely when I press on the breaks. I was thinking it was a caliper however I just replaced the back left one about a month ago and the back right one seems to disengage. How far should the caliper piston move if it was working properly (say if I was measuring the distance between the break pads)?

2. When I go to start my engine it doesn’t always turn over for about 7-8 seconds. However, if I let it rev for about 1 second then let off then go to start it again it will turn over immediately and I can smell some exhaust coming through the vents on the dash. Also, sometimes when I go to turn it over that second time after the 1 second “prime” it makes that grinding noise like the noise you get when a car already started and you try to start it again. This problem also seems to change with the level of gas in my tank; normally on a full tank to ¾ of a tank I don’t have this problem. And it worsens as i get closer and closer to empty

3. My shifter is loose and when the car is in reverse i have to push the shifter forward to hit the switch to turn the reverse lights on.

Any and all help would be appreciated. THANKS

1 change your rear U joint...

2 Sounds like you might have a bad ignition switch.. But if it does it that way every single time?????????? I dont know..

Also the grinding is probobly a starter or flywheel issue.. (Pull the starter off and get it checked.. And while its off check your flywheel.. Make sure no chipped teeth... )

3 Take it to the dealer ..There is a recall on Shift detent they will fix it for free...
