Hey,
I bought a flex fan for my 79 cj7 and it is too big for the shroud (there is supposed to be 3/4 inch clearance between shroud and fan and there's like 2mm). My question is, do I really need the shroud? What purpose does it serve? I know about the dangers of the flex fan flying apart and so forth and am willing to live with not running the engine with the hood open. I don't regularly stick my hand near the running fan anyway! And in the installation it says to install the fan so it is half in and half out of the shroud. So what're the dangers/benfits? Any suggestions? Thanks

Chris

The fan shroud is not only there to protect you, but also to direct airflow thru the radiator. Pretty much make it so that the fan can only pull air thru the radiator, and not from anywhere else. My 95 YJ didn't have one when I bought it and it didn't have any cooling problems, but I have heard of people having trouble without one. Take it out and see how it does. If it runs hot, trim it up so it works with the flex fan.
