Has anyone tried using acetone to help increase mpg? Check this article, it says about 3 oz per ten gallons. I am going to try it out and if I see an increase in my 97 TJ I will post again

LOL, this is an OLD school trick for raising the octane levels in fuel. With the compression ratios we run in these 4.0L motors, there is NO benefit to be had in using acetone or any other solvent to raise octane levels. In fact, your most likely doing more harm than any good. I can see quick replacement time for cats and O2 sensors if you use it with an periodicity.

I've read a lot of interesting info surrounding acetone as a fuel additive; some of it conflicting, but the more I've read the more success stories and seemingly straight scientific evidence to back it up. I've also got a 97 TJ and have been disappointed with the gas mileage too, so I'm trying the acetone trick myself right now. I've only run a tank through so far, and have yet to notice any significant dif. Many of the articles I've perused stress that the gas you get at the pump (depending on vendor and station) may wildly vary in subtle chemical makeup which directly effects how it's going to behave with acetone. This tank I'm trying Mobil 87 with 4.5 oz of pure acetone added. I'll let you know how this pans out...

I'm thinking you're likely right (1fox2go) - I'm pretty sure I'm running the stock gearing, but those 33s are going to have to go. I'm going to downsize to 31s beofre too long, but I'll still havce some time to run a few tanks with acetone through it beforehand

Ok - I can say that after 3 tanks with 3 different brand gasolines (Chevron 87, Texaco 87, Shell 87) acetone has no effect on 4-cyl TJ gas mileage.

I added 4.5 oz of pure acetone fromt he same source to all three tanks and got zippo. Neutral
