I bought this jeep with 33-inchers and am wondering how I can tell whether it's been re-geared or not? I know the speedo wasn't changed, but my GPS tells me I'm doing 65 at 2500 RPMs (5spd 4-cyl 97 TJ). Does anyone have factory gearing with 33-inchers?

AX-5 has a final drive ratio of 0.79.

With 4.10s, 33s, and 2500rpm, you should be travelling roughly 75mph.
With 4.56s, 33s, and 2500rpm, you should be travelling roughly 68mph.
With 4.88s, 33s, and 2500rpm, you should be travelling roughly 63mph.

To get a definitive answer, I'd recommend pulling a diff cover or both and counting the ring and pinion teeth. Divide ring teeth by pinion teeth and you'll have the gear ratio. I've seen the gear ratio stamped into the outside edge of the ring gear, also.

Thanks - I'm going to have to crack the case I think to figure out for sure, but by your chart it sounds like I've got 4.56. You think there'd be any problem downsizing to 31-inchers maintaining that ger ratio?

No...with the 4banger, that's probably a more suitable tire size with that gear ratio.

That's what I was hoping you'd say - I have to firewall the pedal to maintain 65 on a gentle incline or with a slight headwind.

THANKS!

If you're floored and running 65 in fifth I want to guess your on 3.73 or maybe 3.07 gears. With 33" tires my guess is 3.73

I had 3.07 gears with 31" tires and was almost powerless at 65. I regeared to 4.10 and increased my tire size to 33"s and now have my power back in higher gears.

Borrow a GPS unit and dtermine your actual speed or measure a mile and time it out.

He's got a 4cyl 5-speed. It's got 4.10s already.
