My 99 TJ lights up the front left directional (both the bulb in the fender flare and the one in the grill) when I push the brake pedal! If I then flip the left directional on, it works normally. In fact if I turn the right directional on the left one goes out , too and everything works right until I release and press the brake pedal again. I looked for obvious signs like melted/abraded wiring, both under dash and underhood, but couldn't find anything. Is this a failure mode for the brake light switch or the flasher/hazard relay? Anyone else have a similar set of symptoms?

I figured out the problem. It was the multi-function switch (dimmer, directional and hazard) in the steering column. This must be a fairly common problem with the TJ's since I found at least 4 other people that had the exact same symptoms happen on theirs. I didn't think that switch could be it because I didn't see how the brake lights would have anything to do with it, but they must feed throught there for something. Anyway, $55 at the dealership for the part and now no more problem.
