My jeep is a 97 zj 4.0 with 170,00. Recently I have had a problem with the motor running ruff. I heard a new winding sound coming from the intake area so I thought it was a bad gasket considering I replaced the exhaust manifold with a header a year and a half ago. The gasket wasnt the prob so my next though was cracked intake manifold. I changed that and still have the prob.
When I start it cold, it seems to run ok(with the rich smell) for about 15min, then it starts reving like its fighting for gas. Also, sooty tailpipe and when reving it kicks out oil i think-black smoke. Any help would be great. Thanx

Red,
Sounds like it might be a vacuum leak. Not hard to check if you've access to acetylene.

Is it stupid to ask if you checked your filter... A dirty (very dirty) filter will cause you to run rich....

If thats not it... Try some carb cleaner... Start the engine and spray it around in various places and see if the idle changes.. If it does there is a broken vacuum line in that area...

If that doesnt work.. Post back I will put my coconut to work...

First guess is bad o2 sensor, second guess is the fuel pressure regulator.
