hello,

i am experiencing something lately with my 89 cherokee laredo, when i get up to speeds of 45-65, the front end will suddenly start to shake violently... however i cant just accellerate through it, i have to reduce my speed to about 15mph until is stops, then i can keep driving... its made my jeep undriveable on the freeway and i HAVE to find out how to fix it...

i took it to my mechanic and had him tighten all the joints and whatnot, balanced the tires, etc. it helped a bit, but it started doing it again under a week later. My mechanic says that his next gues would be to replace the steering gear box, but i know that gets a bit pricey so i wanted to see if anyone had any similar experience/suggestions... please let me know

Moving this to the Cherokee forum.

Sounds like death wobble. Is it lifted or stock? I would not replace the steering gear box unless it's leaking or has some visible damage. Did he check the the bearings and alignment while he had it? And did he tighten everything to spec?

Death wobble is one of those things that you need to go through all the front end components until you find the one (or more than one) that is causing the problem. Like Code3TJ asked, how much lift is on it, if any?

Things to check when trouble shooting death wobble: alignment, tire balance, trackbar, tie rod & ends, shocks, control arms & bushings, bearings, all heim joints, steering stabilizer, axle u-joints, brakes...and that's just off the top of my head. Wink
