Here's a start - http://jeephorizons.com/tech/xjstockspecs.html
This'll tell you the different features that were available over the years. Other than that, I'll have to defer to the grocery getter guys. Mr. Green

If those are your target years, stick to a 92 or 93. Some 90's & 91's have vacuum disconnect front axles which can be a PITA. Also keep an eye on the rear axle...try to find one with a Chryco 8.25. In terms of shafts & spline count it's not that much stronger than the D35, but it does have the 3" axle tubes (the D35's is 2.62").

Thanks for the feedback guys. I did see a pic of the two different axes but was wondering if they say on them which one they are too?

There might be a tag on the diff cover, but not always. The easiest way to tell is to look at the bottom of the axle housing. Here's another pic (or maybe this is the one you saw). The 8.25 is on the left, D35 is on the right. The key giveaway is the square lip on the bottom of the 8.25 axle housing. You can tell the difference at a glance.

thanks for the tip about the square bottom, I hadn't noticed the square bottom. So besides the axle is every thing else pretty much the same between the two years?

Do Cherokees have any common problems i should know about?

Thanks
NEil

Aside from the available trim packages, 92's and 93's are the same. For those two years (actually from 92-99), there's nothing specific to watch out for...outside of the normal used vehicle stuff at least. I'd stay away from ABS...but that's me.
