I'm at a loss...I have a 97 TJ 4-banger with
31-inchers,
no body lift,
no sus lift
a K&N filter
Banks Torque-tube headers
Magnaflow exhaust

I change the oil regularly, have recently replaced the trans fluid, plugs, rotor, ditributor cap. Every other tank I've run injector cleaner through it also. Yet I'm still getting an average 15MPG, when I've seen so many others on this post getting 18-19 with the same setup.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have a 4 banger also, and I ran it stock with 31's for about a year or so and never got better than 16 MPG.

basically the Jeep is as aerodynamic as a barn. Its a box on wheels and even in stock form sets high so there is about a 1000 things that catch air, stop air etc and all this hurts milage.

Yeah - that "wind barrier" I hit at about 50 gave that fact away real quick. I just see these folks bragging on the forum about 18-19 MPG highway and have no idea how they're getting it.

I don't expect a mailbox on wheels to be sleek, but I wonder if there's anything els eI can replace/refurb that would give me that (mythical?) 18-19mpg.

How do you drive it? If you are trying to make your 4-banger feel like a V8 and have it balls to the wall all the time, mileage will go down pretty quick.

My six cylinder Cherokee gets way better mileage than my buddy's four cylinder Wrangler.

I getting around 18 -19 mpg with 6cyl and 32Ďs. I donít rev it past 2200 or so, and keep it around 70 on the freeway.
When Iím going up the 15 fwy when the Santa Ana winds kick up, the mpg suffers bad. The worst I have mileage Iíve had was 16.

When I'm getting on the highway I'll pass 3000 but otherwise I ususally shift around 22-2500. At other's advice, I removed a 3-inch BB, downsized from 33's to 31's in the hope of improving this abysmal gas mileage. The thought that that my little banger couldn't cope with turning 33's and the added 3-inch wind block. Since I've done all that the mileage is actually worse.

At this point I guess I'm resigned Neutral

Unless anyone else has suggestions on maintenance I haven't done...

have you verified your speed via a gps? if your jeep came stock with say...27" tires then you've increased the diameter considerably. you may be getting more miles per tank than you realize.
chris (unless my math is backwards Smile)

There are a few options that you can do to get better gas mileage, new exhaust, headers, etc but that will only increase it very little. A tune up will help also if you haven't tuned it up recently. Other than regearing your jeep to 4.56s, there isn't to much that will improve it greatly.

The way that I came across 19 mpg was by accident. I was off on a trail with a few buddies when one of my tires went completely flat. I had a hole in the sidewall so I had to replace the tire. When I replaced this one tire I had the tire shop fill up all the tires with nitrogen instead of air. That cost about $20 total and saved about 1.5 MPG. Not only did it help with the ride but also the gas mileage. In addition to this I also have the Airaid high flow intake kit that improved the gas mileage as well. The only problem is that you are going to spend about $300 to only save a dollar or two per tank; it takes a long time to make up the initial cost. In addition to all of this, try putting Royal Purple in your front and rear differential. It will take at least two bottles total, costs about $15 and gives you at least 1 MPG.

I own a I6 with a 5spd and 32ís and I get consistent 18-19 MPG, and the speedo reads 6 MPH slow.

I did a check with my GPS and found that when the trip meter reads 10 miles the GPS reads 11.2. So take the miles indicated after a tank and multiply it by 1.12 (11.2 divided in to 10.0 =1.12).
Example: trip meter reads 250.0 miles times 1.12 = 280.0 true miles, now figure your MPG.

Youíll be surprised
