Hey what's up guys. Newbie here but not to Jeep. I've been researching for sometime swapping the 249 for the 242 as I have the VC blues. I think I've got it down but just want to have a little clarity before I begin. I've searched the forums to death but I'm still foggy in a few places. So here goes...

My Jeep - '94 5.2l Quadra-trac 249

I just bought some spare parts, enough to allow me to do the shaft swap (if needed) without dropping my transfer case. What I bought...

'95 5.2l 249 t-case and 46RH Trans. (mileage unknown)
'97 242 t-case (engine size unknown, mileage unknown)

My plan:
Test out the 242 on the spare 46RH and if it fits, hoorah, I'm golden. If not then breakdown the '95 249 and '97 242, swap parts, make 1 good Select-trac case to mate up to my 46RH.

Any concerns at this point, outside of what was documented in the writeup I found here (and a damn awesome one if I may say)? From what I've read, there is a small chance it will be a direct bolt up but chances are that I will need to swap shafts. Thanks ahead of time and sorry for dredging it back up![/b]

Hi! I did a succesfull swap and you'll love it when it's done! Feelable (is that a word?) power at your rear wheels, and better (I get about 21 MPG hwy-vs-17 mpg with VC locked up all the time) gas mileage. All you SHOULD have to do is measure the output shaft, do a spline count(almost always the same), and swap parts if necessary. I say SHOULD, because....... something always seems to not fit quite right. You might get lucky. If you have questions this is a GREAT forum! Peeple answer quick and are very nice and don't judge! Especially Swampy! and I DON"T want your Bud Light man! Good Luck Bro!

Awesome, thanks guys. I'm going to pick up the tranny and t-cases this evening. I probably won't get to start on it until next week but I'll drop in to let you know.

I like the 46 tranny a lot even though they are kind of rare. I think they may have come in some Durangos and I know my 5.9 has one. It should handle all the torque you want to throw at it. Also, I'm on my second 5.9 ZJ (the first was totaled) and I still haven't swapped in my 242 for the P.O.S. 249. The only advantage I see to the 249 is not sending too much torque to the aluminum rear axle, but you can put the 242 into 4-full time for those times when you need to run 35" swamper boggers at the mudpit drags to beat the hell out of the fords and chevys- and even those hemi grand cherokees with the single speed transfer cases.

The 46 tranny is rare? It came in the 93-95 V8 quadra's so it can't be all that rare...can it?

I got the parts home tonight, looking good so far. Only thing I noticed is on the housing on the 242 (red arrow)

is not there. The shaft was exposed. Do I need to buy this piece, find it, or will the one from the 249 fit?

The part numbers I have are NP249J and NP242J but it looks like the input shaft is going to have to be swapped. Size and spline count is different. Everything else looks good. I'm going to start the break down mid-week so I'll post again. Shall I take pictures or are you guys versed enough in this already? Thanks again for all the help.[/url]

(Swampy, I hope you don't mind me borrowing that photo to point out my missing case. I didn't have any from my case yet. I'll delete it if you want.)

Dont sweat it ..That is just a housing .. IT doesnt do anything.. The shaft will slide over the spline same as it does.. There is a seal on the inside of the case so that housing doesnt do anything.. YOu should have grabbed the acordian thing off the shaft of the 242 it will fill the gap ..But its no big deal..

If you want I can take a picture of my T case its sitting on the ground in my garage..

Oh and 46RH is not really rare.. (Its a dodge 518 its in almost all dodge trucks with V8 from about 90 till 96 and in 96 they just switched to the 46RE.. Still the same basic tranny..)Nixt..Your 5.9 has the RE ... Its a little better than the RH but like I said.. Basiclly the same tranny..

I learn something new everytime Swampy makes a post. I was only familiar with the 42 and the 44 tranny. I couldn't ever find any rebuild info about the 46.

Swampy, thanks for that. I didn't have the opportunity to grab anything other than the case itself. The shop I bought the parts from had already pull the stuff for me. A pic of your case would be nice.

I'm actually glad I've got to swap the input shaft. It appears the '97 tcase had been worked on at some point. The RTV sticking out is definitely not factory. This way I get to peek inside there.

Thanks again!
