OK so we just bought a 2000 XJ limited and my wife wakes me up this morning looking concerned. We just bought our pretty 2000 XJ about a month or two ago.

She takes me out to the driveway and show me a light on her dash. Im pretty sure its the check engine light

It looks like this but without the 'check engine' text... its just the icon.

I'm not sure what, all the sudden, caused to to come on. I checked the oil and tranny fluids just to be sure before I sent her on her way to work. I'm sure someone has some leads as to why this might have come on all the sudden. I know check engine lights can sometimes be results of faulty O2 sensors, etc... anyone have any info .. like I say.. its a 2000 XJ limited...

Thanks

One thing I can think of is I did add some of that refridgerant to charge the system about 3 weeks ago.. I added a very small amount since the lvl's seemed pretty good as it was.

The only other thing I can think of is that the compressor does make a large amount of noise from under the hood when it engages. Much more than I would like it to be making. I'm pretty sure its the AC comp because it goes away when I turn off the AC.. Its also been really really hot here the past couple days. Like - 100 degrees or so. Just thought I might toss that in. You're gonna need to take it to a shop that has an OBD II diag reader to find out what the code is and what it means, or you'll need to buy a code reader yourself, hook it up to the computer port under the dash, and look up the error code. I'd recommend the former unless you do some research into what are the best readers out there. There is another method of reading engine errors which require a number of key turns in the ignition at certain intervals, but it may not give you a precise reading as to the nature of the problem.

As far as the A/C stuff, I'm getting the same noise you are, and after recharging the compressor as well. I've resigned myself to saving up the money and getting a specialist (yikes!!!) to check the A/C system, as well as show me what to do and how to fix it in the future. My noise originates when I first start up the Jeep with the A/C already running. If I let it get down the road a few miles and re-engage it, it smoothes out. But it is indicative of a problem, either in the compressor or belt assembly, more than likely due to overcharging.

thanks... so im pretty much screwed and gotta take it to the dealer? I've seen code readers at Kragen before but am not sure if they are the way to go or not. I am highly mechanically capable, just new to the jeep stuff.

You don't have to take it to a shop. Rolling Eyes You can check the codes yourself. Here's a writeup on how and what they mean. http://jeephorizons.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2719

oh that link is freakin awesome man.. where did you get those code readouts? If a diagnostic tool isnt too much I will just go out and buy one this weekend....

I am banking that the light coming on isnt pertaining to a rod'throwing type emergency problem..

Unless you want to see real time stats of what the sensor system is doing, you really don't need the diagnostic tool. The key trick will display the codes on the odometer. It works on both our 97 XJ and our 02 TJ. The only time I have not seen it work is when there is some type of performance chip installed. For some reason the chips block the codes from being displayed.

Ok.. i tried it when i got home... and it definately worked.. I got the diagnostic to run 0000000 to 9999999... all while testing all the guages, LEDs and warning lights etc.. but once it got to 9999999 it then went back to my original tripometer or odometer (i tried starting with both) and gave no Serial number or error codes.... the check engine light then came on a few short seconds after i got 9999999 on the diagnostic.

I tried this with the parking brake both on and off, door closed and open. I also tried the OBDI method of on,off,on,off,on and watch for the check engine light to flash... but that did not work at all.

any clue?!> Crying or Very sad

It's worked on almost every Jeep I've tried it on...but that's the 2nd '00 XJ that it hasn't...and I've seen it work on an '01.

The best thing I can tell you is go to an AutoZone. They will pull the codes for free.
