Just finished tearing the trans down, #1 forward clutch was the problem,if I just would have removed the trans right away instead of replacing the solenoids and yadayadayada I'd be $2000 richer.
Metal all over, well good part is the tranny will be completely rebuilt with a rebuild kit and the converter will be refreshed and upgraded too.
Also the junk metal destroyed my #1 sun gear.
Thanks to all who tried to help. Smile

Yup I have the shift kit already installed, had that done along with the solenoids at first, now ist just the "super rebuild kit" and a new sun gear.
Should be better than new Cool

sorry,it's not called super it's called deluxe, just includes more parts then the other one.
Well the shift kit that I had installed is supposed to make it more reliable and the converter will be upgraded as well,I have no idea what they do for it though.

Just got my converter back,it was the cause of the whole thing, somthing broke inside (band) and got into the cooler (radiator) so I have to by-pass the radiator and use a new trans cooler.
Hope to have it all together before this weekend.

Nonononono the converter (lock up band) vent bad and pieces of it went thru the trans to the radiator, clogged it or possibly the pressure dropped and then the forward cluch overheated and metal from it went everywhere.
Now I bought a new Cooler just for the tranny and will bypass the radiator part.
Converter is rebuilt now and tranny is ready for install.

Good for you dude,I was told to get a good cooler replace the original one and by-pass the radiator. They said it's impossible to clean out the radiator part,I also installed a temp gauge for the trans fluid.

Same thing happened to mine.. I am doing a rebuild right now and am going to take off my Converter and drop it off at the shop on Monday..

I bought this

And am having custom braided steel lines made for Tranny cooling duty.. I am not going to rely on that stupid radiator any more....

I have taken lots of pics of the tranny rebuild and am going to do a writeup when I am done...

How far have you gotten along Iceland???

I am guessing you did the Transgo shift kit..

It was surprisingly easy... Are you haveing any difficulty with your tranny???

Overdrive unit on mine seems fine.. I pulled it off and used the feeler gauge and everything is up to specs.. (But I did start with a tranny from another ZJ not my own...)

Are you going to get a new Radiator or do something else for cooling issues???

I did nothing my self but too help my budddy ,who rebuilt the trans,to install it after rebuild,to busy these days.
Mine is up and running like new Smile

The radiator part is not so stupid it warms up the fluid more quickly when it's cold, but I by passed it like the pro's who rebuilt the converter told me to do.

The shift kit was called A500 on the receipt.

I think I have the same prob. I was driving down the highway one day and my tranny jumped out of overdrive into third gear. Drives fine until I get to fourth gear. I have a 98 JGC. I have already replaced the tranny once. Please re-post and let me know what you ended up having to do. or if any one else has any suggestions it would be appreciated.
