i will be replacing my thermostat, gasket, or no gasket? opinions please. i never have any luck changing these. they always seem to leak. also, i have a 91 chereokee, build date is 4/91. did any 91's come with the newer non vacum front drive? i am having problems with the engaging and disengaging of 4wd. i looked under the truck, and dont seem to see any vacum lines. where would they be located? thanks for the help.

I also hav ea '91, not sure what build date and I'm by far not a mechanic but I just replaced my thermo last week, along with new waterpump being as they go hand in hand and why not since the therms are less than 10 bucks. It's the second one I've done on my '91 in 4 years and 1 on my wife's '92 and I would recommend using the gasket. I've NEVER had any leaks or problems of any sort and these vehicles are from florida where the heat and a/c can kill a vehicle. Haha. As far as the 4wd not engaging properly can't help much there. Had that kinda prob on my '91 when I bought it from my mechanic 5 years ago and he replaced the front diff fluid and as far as a grinding noise, he recommended I replace the transfe case. So after slappin in a new np231 I've not had any probs and she's got 300k on her, so? These guys on here are great and more knowledgable than I am, so I would like to see their answers. Good luck and keep her on the trail. Wink

Some of the front axles through 91 are vacuum disconnect and some are not. If it is, it will have two vacuum lines going into the back diff.

As far as the thermostat: yes, use a gasket and some RTV when you install it. Make sure you clean up the mating surfaces on the cylinder head and thermostat housing before installation. There's also air vent hole in the thermostat that needs to be positioned at the top.

Good Luck.
