I've got a 93 cherokee xj, 4.5" lift, 5 spd, 4.0l, w/ 32's.
I finally found out that my rear axle is the Chrysler 8.25. I've already decided I want either 4:56 or 4:88 gears. Does it take an aftermarket carrier to install the gears? and is it true that you can only go as low as a 4:56 in an 8.25??
Also, how strong are the 8.25's?? I know the D44's and Ford 8.8's are a little more sturdy, but how weak is it really?? It's a daily driver that I plan on taking through Rubicon and other rock trails a few times a year.
Thanks for any input.

For the 8.25 you do not need to change the carrier for 4.56's. That is as low as you can go. In a 93 you have the 27 spline version, not much if any stronger than the D35. I have the 29 spline, running 4.56's & 33's and haven't had any problems, yet. HTH. JIM.

plus if your not planning on going bigger than 33's, then i don't think you should even consider going above 4.10 or 4.56.

somebody correct me if i'm wrong.
