A buddy of mine bought a $500 Cherokee. It's an 88 2-door Sport with 170k on it. Anything special related to Cherokees I should check while it's still in my driveway? Tomorrow we'll actually get to crawl around underneath it and what not.

It does have a cracked exhaust manifold. I'm not too excited about removal and reinstallation after doing mine on the 99 TJ. The welding part is easy.

You know the drill E....just put a good visual inspection on everything. The first thing I would look at would be the area of the rear main engine seal.

We've found that the horn doesn't work, as well as the front left turn signal. Tried the easy route by replacing the bulb...no luck. Looks like I'll be playing with the multimeter tomorrow.

I will be checking the brakes also.

Rear shoes and front pads were changed. Also swapped out a rusted wheel cylinder.

Front turn signals and parking lights work. The sockets were bad due to rust and corrosion. Replaced them with Motormite part number 85898 that we found at Pep Boys and Strauss Discount Auto. It's listed as a Ford part but is identical. Cut the old ones off and spliced the new ones in...they work as good as new.

Just another update....took it for inspection (buddy has a connection) and it passed. So the manifold is gonna wait until the spring/summer when it's warmer out.

The $500 Cherokee didn't last too long. My buddy noticed the oil pressure hit 0 and decided since it was driving fine and not making any noises, he kept driving. It then started making noise and he pulled over. Rather than dump money into a POS $500 vehicle, we're going to junk it or part it out. He bought a 97 ZJ instead.

At least I don't have to fix that cracked exhaust manifold come spring.
