I have a '97 TJ and don't know how different your XJ is but... the 2.5l TJs use a MAP sensor and don't have an EGR valve. The MAP sensor for mine is btw $100-$150 aftermarket. I haven't even asked the dealer. I think the 4.0l ones do use an EGR valve. A Haynes manual will tell you a lot about what you have. I use it often and this problem I am having is the only time it let me down.
