I'm having some sort of problem with the Cherokee. I was going to give it an oil change on saturday AM, but the car wouldn't start. Checked the battery, alternator, started, plugs, spark wires, fuses, distributor, & all look good.
I turn the key on the car & nothing......it's not even trying to turn over.
Had the car towed on Monday to the auto shop, and once delivered to the shop, the mechanic turns the key & the freaken car starts.

They kept it all day monday & the car started all day.....a diagnositic test was given & the car came out clean.
I'm wondering if the aftermarket car alarm could cause the problem.

Also, when I picked up the car today on Tuesday, the mechanic did have a problem starting it up. Nothing new to me....the car has been having a problem starting in the mornings, but I could never figure out why. The mechanic could not start the car, while it was on parking (it wasn't even attempting to turn over), but once he placed it on neutral, the car immediatelly started.
What gives!!!!

He claims their is something wrong with the Neutral Sensor Rolling Eyes . I've never heard of such a sensor.........I know the answer......but is the mechanic trying to take me for a ride.

Help please

Sounds like the Neutral Safety switch. If you push the shifter forward more alot of times the vehicle will start. There is a sticky on the main page that tells about it. Here's the link: http://jeepin.com/features/nss/index.asp

I'm suppose to take the car back to the dealership on Friday night. I'm going to ask him about the neutral switch & a price quote. If it's to expensive, then I'll just do it myself.

i can tell you right now it's going to be to expensive.

well actually that depends on what tranny you have. if you have the AW4, the switch alone is between $200-300 at the parts store. if you have one of the other trannys, then i think they're like $20.

i had a similar problem on my XJ and i did what it says in the link that JeepinNH post. it cost me 1 can of brake cleaner, a little bit of grease, and about 1 hour to do it. it's been perfect ever since.
