So my 95 YJ I4 w/manual 5 speed has a new problem.
i'm pretty sure its the AX-15 but it could be the AX-5

anyone out there have any problems with the AX-(1)5 ?
specifially 5th gear not getting enough fluid and wearing down? (my mechanic said its a common prob.)

and... anyone know where to get rebuild parts, ideally 5th gear?

or... how much would you pay for a tranny from a salvage yard?

thanks... i'm gonna try not to freak out too much Wink

the I-4 is definitely the ax-5 unless somebody did a conversion to ax-15. Yes the 5th gear is common. I think it's a snap ring problem. You can also pick up a junk yard case for $500 - $1000 depending on your location.

I think tellico sells every including a full case.

thanks shotgun...

i was just lookin at that page too... wierd Wink

are you sayin (i know you don't know for sure because you don't have the tranny there, but) that it could be the snapring holding 5th in place rather than the gear itself? ie. making it wobble?

As I recall the 5th gear snap ring breaks causing the gear to slide on the shaft causing other damage in most cases.

It's kinda like the NV4500 5th gear issue where they didn't lock tite the bolt holding 5th in place. Dodge came out with a recall kit that had a bolt and a packet of lock-tite.

this should be an interesting feat.. and driving it to the place on the highway at 40mph... any takers on how may times i'll be given the finger?

im hoping you made a typo there

if not.....

sorry bud, but if your going from an ax-15 to an ax-5..... im gonna be blunt about this so.... your an idiot if you follow through on it. not only would that take a custom bellhousing, you would have to change the shaft in your t/c cuz the 4banger came with a 21spline and the I6 came with a 23 spline... not to mention that ax-5 wouldnt last long with the increased power/torque being put through it... and before you know it... your looking gonna be kicking yourself for not just getting that pathetic recall kit and saving yourself some money...

but its your jeep... so your choice.. best of luck to you.

Whats 5th gear? Yeah swaping out a Trans your self is not a huge deal if you have some help, and some knowhow. I've dropped the trans replaced 2nd gear and put it back in with a friend in a night w/o a trans lift or anything. See if you can find just the trans and you'll save alot of money.
