I think ive got it narowed down to the ball joints on the j bar, i think the proper name is pittman arm, or the tierod ends. I am however unsure how to change the ball joints the repair book does not cover how to take them out, thanks.

What repair book do you have? The FSM has detailed instructions. On the pitman arm and tierod ends, you'll need a fork bar (a.k.a. picklefork) to remove them. You also need the forkbar to remove the steering knuckle from the joints and then a ball joint press to both remove the old joints and install the new ones.

The forkbar is fairly inexpensive...most autoparts stores sell them. I know that AutoZone rents ball joint presses.
