ive replaced my alternator but I am still not getting anything from the alternator back to the battery. I have four total wires coming from the wiring harness located behind the alternator. I have two connected to the alternator while one is the ground and the other runs along another harness and has some type of three pronged plug at the end (external voltage regulator?) but I was told my voltage regulator is built within the alternator so that plug just hangs loosely not connected to anything. I checked my electrical system for any type of short and it seems that my electrical system is fine. So can someone just tell me about the wires coming from the alternator wiring harness ie. where they attach to and which one gives it power, which one supplys the battery which one is the ground and if that three pronged plug is supposed to attach to anything.

thanks

the wife's 91 cherokee had a similar issue. We had a hers had a heavy guage wiring connecting the back to the fuse box I think. then it had a molded piece that connected the ground and two field wires. one of the field wires went bad in the molded section.

According to advance auto the 91 cherokee and the 90 wrangler use the same alternator. I can't tell you which wire goes where but that is definitely the problem.
