I recently bought an 86 XJ 2.5, 5spd. Only thing keeping it off of the road was the turn signals did not work. Tracked it down to the turn signal switch, and replaced it, now that is fine, but the shaft that runs down the steering column wobbles. The steering wheel wobbles as well. Its a GM steering column, does anybody have any remedies short of colum replacement?

If its time to replace the column, do I need any special tools, etc. Never done this before.

Thanks

86 XJ with the dreaded 2.8, but that makes a heck of a racket now, so I am saving up for the 3.4

i own a 86 xj also i had a 85 blazer with tilt wheel took the colum all apart and there are three torx bolts under the locking plate tht loosened up tried tightening but they came loose again put lock washers and locktite on them and this solved the problem. also there is a tool to remove the locking plate on top there is a hefty spring under to compress i did it the first time with out the tool but i broke down and bought it the second time around was worth the money hope this helps
