Backfires usually come from the muffler right? My muffler is damn near the rear bumper. The pop is coming from the engine bay.

Well now it makes sense...I'm glad I got the answer but it wasn't an answer I wanted...the fuel filter is a PITA to change I REALLY don't want to drop the tank. Thanks for the help though.

are you sure you have to drop the tank? my 87 xj has it on the frame rail, as does the 96 my dad has

My Chilton's book said I have to drop the tank and pull the whole pickup assembly out...then again that POS book hasn't been good for much so far...I couldn't see a fuel filter from looking underneath but maybe I didn't look hard enough. I'm sure Phantum would know.
