Hi everyone! I'm a Jeep newbie!!

I just recently acquired a 1999 Jeep Cherokee. The steering wheel wont tilt. I was able to tell that the tilt lever is attached to a cable. I'm guessing that the cable has stretched or became loose at the other end , keeping the lock mechanism from disengaging.

Since I just bought the Jeep I don't have a repair manual yet. I figured someone here might know the answers to my questions:

Has anyone else here had the same problem, and how was it fixed.

What do I need to take apart so that I can inspect the cable and locking mechanism?

Thanks in advance!

Well, I got it fixed.

I took off the plastic panel below the steering wheel, then the metal panel.

I removed the two nuts that hold the tilt adjustment mechanism in place.

I unhooked the cable that goes between the adjustment mechanims and the tilt lever.

I unhooked the bottom of the spring that keep the steering column from falling when the tilt lever is pulled.

I removed the nut that holds the adjusment mechanism to the steering column.

Then, I was able to remove the tilt mechanism.

I whacked it with a hammer a few times and it was good as new.

I reinstalled it and now my tilt steering works great.

I just love it whenever a repair involves whacking something with a hammer!!
