OK, so I have an ever growing roar coming from my front axle. I have already eliminated my hubs. So my question is how many bearings are in the axle and where are they located. Also is it something I can do myself?

Other than the 4 in the unit bearing/hub, there are four other bearings.
Inner pinion
outer pinion
left carrier
right carrier

the two carrier bearings are the same for all intents. the Pinion bearings are most like two different sizes.

Can you do this your self? Can you set up gears? My thought would be to take it to a gear and axle joint and have them install a master install kit.

If you just do the front I'd leave it at that. If you think you might want them to do the rear at the same time. It's time to regear and possiblly lock it up too. These might as wells will cost a bundle but might as well do it while your in there.

Before you tear into the axle check the front axle u-joints. When they go bad they make a racket especially around slow cornering. You can spray some wd-40 in them to see if the noise goes away. If so then they need to be replaced. The parts are cheap but the job takes awhile.
