I have removed the bumper on my 88 XJ as part of the restoration process. One of the bumper mounts was rusted out, so I purchased a couple new ones online. I knew I'd never be able to turn the bolts that hold the bumper mounts to the unibody, so I drilled into the heads to make snapping them off easier (and it did). I thought something was odd when the studs wouldn't pop out from the inside rear of the unibody. Took a closer look and found out why. . . the nuts are spot welded to the frame. Anyone have any suggestions or do I just have to get in there and grind the suckers out?
I am pulling the fuel tank when the weather gets a little warmer so that I don't blow myself up grinding and welding, so I should have better acces to the welded nuts.

Too bad, these usually come out relatively well when lubed for awhile. Sounds like you need to grind or drill.

Then tap new threads in the hole to the bolt size you need.
