Ok, my buddy has an 87 XJ. It has overheated ever since he got it. He put a new radiator in it and that helped tons, now it only overheats when he is moving slowly, like climbing a rock or stuck in mud and spinning. The mechanical clutch on the fan was bad, so he replaced it, I figured that would fix it but it didn't. We also replaced the water pump, but the steam still flys. We have done the thing where you get the air out of the system, but it still overheats. My guess is not enough air moving? Since it does it when hes moving slowly. IT is missing the auxiliary electrical fan, would this be enough of a loss to cause this? Any ideas are appreciated, hes my main trail partner lol. Thanks.

It needs the electric fan. Unless the fan he has covers the whole radiator which I'm sure it doesn't. Without both he's only cooling half the radiator. That's fine for street driving, but in the woods it will never fly. I've got a 99 Cherokee with both fans and I tried everything in mine and it still ran hot. Ended up running a 160 thermostat and an override switch for the fan so I could control it in the woods. Been fine since then.
