HELP!!! The push button that releases the ignition key has broken and will not let me turn the key at all. The key slides in with no problem but it will not turn. Is there some way to bypass the locking mechanism so I can drive it home?
rofl

Thanks for your help

I had this happen on an F150 years ago. I removed the cover off the column and it was right there. Im not sure if its as easy with the Jeep, but Im sure its fairly close.

pull the lock cylinder out and twist the wires together. That should get you home. Smile Is it a manual or auto? If manual, you can always push/clutch dump start it.

Sounds like the cylinder needs replacing.

I thought there was a release pin under the steering column for the cylinder? I'm going of memory here...my FSM is in the Jeep, which is in the body shop of course...perhaps someone could look it up for you...

However it will not push up all the way...something must be jammed up in there...and the cylinder will not turn to the on position as it states in the shop manual...

Thanks

I sent you a PM. Thought the cylinder would turn.

Spray lots of lube in the keyway and get a plastic hammer. Rap on the top and the bottom of the cylinder with the key in the lock (remove your key from the key ring). While rapping try turning the key "lightly" towards the ON position. While rapping the key may want to back out so you will have to keep light pressure on it too. This is a three handed operation, but it does work many times.

There is a wafer or dirt stuck in the lock cylinder and this "may" get it to turn once for you.

You really need a locksmith at this point and I hope you do not do too much damage to the column, GOOD LUCK!
