My 1995 Grand Cherokee requires premium unleaded or it knocks like crazy (I live at 7500 ft above sea level and routinely drive above that altitude). The local dealer has suggested that they can reprogram the ignition timing to allow me to run regular unleaded gasoline.

Is this advisable?
Is it something (computer chip) that I can buy as an after market item and install myself?
What will this do to my ability to meet emissions tests?
I understand that I will sacrifice some power but how much?
Any other down sides?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I had the same problem until I used a good carb cleaner. I'm back to normal now. You can try DC cleaner or Seafoam.
