Does anyone know the maximum weight the standard roof racks can bear? I am using them to carry my windsurf gear, and the weight is fast approaching 40lbs. Any tips on making sure the gear stays in place (other than using good binders etc)?

It's somewhere around 200-250 lbs. if i'm not mistaken. You should be safe cause i've carried the same thing on mine. It'll hold my 31" mt fine too. As for makin it stay, ratchet tie downs work wonders for any application up there.

wilderness rack, fit to the gutters, instead of the stock rack, with a plexiglass air shield in front for freeway use.... can't go wrong, i've had around 300 lbs on it with no prob, i used 6 braces, 3 on each side, for extra support.... well worth the money... saves me from a trailer most of the time.... i can put full size plywood up top with no probs.... overhangs about 2 feet, but it'll lock down tighter than death row...

acrid.

oh ya, ratchet straps and one of those bungie truckbed spider net thingamajigees.... works fine...

I went for a Yakima roof rack. Attaches to the factory rack and locks in place so it can't be stolen. It'll hold anything you can put on it. The only downside is that it's really pricey. If you're going to get one, get it on sale. There are also a hoard of attachments to it (bike racks, snowboard racks, baskets) so it'll be very usefull.

Yakima lists the load limit for their bars at 120 pounds, depending of course on how it's mounted. The strongest way to go is Q towers or raingutter towers. Depending on how your factory rack is set up, the rail riders are ok too, but I'd avoid mounting anything on the factory rack. Not nearly as strong.

I've had alot of sheetrock on the stock rack of the 88 I used to have. I've used that rack alot of times with lots of weight and no problems. You will have no issues with only 40 lbs of weight. Make sure the adjustable bars are tightened or locked well (depends on the year) and use rachet or Ancra type straps. Also set it up so the wind from driving doesn't grab it like a sail. Have fun!
