Does anyone know if you can replace a 32RH (3 speed auto) in an '01 Wrangler sport with a 42RLE (4 speed auto) out of a newer wrangler w/o any modifications.

Without any modifications? No.

The 4 speed auto isn't that great, not enough that I'd be swapping it in...and I have one. The OD is too deep, IMO.

Do you know what modifications it would need? I only want to do it for gas mileage, I only get 13, 14 mpg with a ton of highway driving.

Not off the top of my head. The 42RLE is not a great transmission and people are not frequently swapping them in due to the deep OD.

If I were to be interested in a swap to a 4-speed auto, I'd be looking at the AW-4 from a late model XJ. You can find details on the swap at Stu's website, www.stu-offroad.com.

You won't see much gain in mileage, regardless of which transmission you have, due to the "brick-on-wheels" aerodynamics of a Wrangler. It's heavy and shaped like a box....neither characteristic is good for fuel efficiency. If you really want to see any gains, get yourself a manual tranny. They use less power to turn and work more efficiently.
