I own Two XJ's 1992 4.0 and a 2000 4.0 Love them both. Just wondering could any one explain why when I am in 4hi or 4lo The part time indicator does not light up. It used to on the 1992 and never has on the 2000 for the year or so I have owned it.

Sounds like the switch may be stuck. I'm not sure exactly where it is and couldn't seem to find it in my manual but I would assume it's either attached to the transfer case or the transfer case linkage. I'm pretty sure it attaches to the transfer case because you can move the 4 wheel lever and the light sometimes stays on until it truely disengages by moving the vehicle a little. Make sure the switch works properly. If it's a 1 wire type you can short the wire to ground, 2 wire short the 2 wires... this should make the light go on/off depending on the setup. If this doesn't work then the bulb may be bad or you have a loose connection.

If you got NP242 (fulltime, parttime), the sensor is mounted into a tcase cover next to speed sensor. You got two wires - one lights full time lamp, the other - part time. To check you have to ground each wire in a connector.

I think it is a common sensor fault... I've found few XJ;s with same problem.. mine too Smile
