I've just bought a Cherokee Sport 1997,sight unseen in the flesh,(is 800 kays away!!,,sounds and looks in a nice well kept knick,(only 56,000 on the clock) going by the web photos,of it. This truck arrives down here,on a transporter,Tues coming, but was just told today, and after a service prior to this delivery, that this red light stays on now,all the time? Not sure,as I ve never sat in one!!help, what area should I be 1st looking at,please?..cheers..Jim..New Zealand...

Sounds like a check engine light. Any maintenance shop can hook up an OBD computer and tell you what the code is, or you can do a certain key sequence in your ignition to tell you what code it is (should be searchable in this forum). If the code is bogus though the shop guy can clear it out for you.

The check engine light would be orange...not red. The most likely candidate is probably the Check Gauges light.

My mistake,it's the red top left cnr light 'maint required'. I did the key on-off-on-off-on thing, and it shows up as codes 12 and 44,which both relate to the battery,12 means disconnection within the last 50 starts, whatever that means, and 44 is the battery temp sensor. Where is this temp sensor, situated,I guess it must be close to the battery? Is it one of the wires connected to a terminal?. Im not sure what I'm looking for!! Very Happy cheers...Jim

From my (1992) Cherokee FSM:

"Maint Reqd" - Used to alert the owner when oxygen sensor-PCV valve replacement and other scheduled emission maintenance is required.

Activated when vehicle mileage reaches the scheduled maintenance interval of approximately 133,000 kilomenters (82,500 miles).

Can be reset with the use of DRB II after appropriate sensor/valve replacement and maintenance is accomplished.

Be aware this is from 1992 FSM but probably still applicable. Hope this helps!

Maint Reqd light is not to be confused with Check Engine Light (CEL).

You should have both (even tho CEL may not be on).

The code for battery temp sensor, most probably is not reason for MAINT REQD light being on. You can fix it and the light will not estinguish I am betting.

Just my best guess . . .
